The physician who defined modern cardiology

Eugene Braunwald was born in Vienna in 1929 and reached the United States as a child refugee from the Nazi occupation of Austria. He took his undergraduate and medical degrees at New York University and trained in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins. He died on 22 April 2026 at the age of ninety-six, having shaped the specialty for more than six decades.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and the early laboratory years

As Chief of Cardiology and Clinical Director at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, Braunwald worked with Andrew Morrow on the haemodynamics of dynamic left ventricular outflow obstruction. Their 213-page monograph in Circulation in 1964 established hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as a distinct clinical entity, and the Braunwald-Morrow description remains the foundation of how the condition is understood at the bedside today.

Infarct size is modifiable

His experimental work established that the size of a myocardial infarct is not fixed at the moment of occlusion but can be altered by intervention. That single idea underwrites reperfusion therapy, the primary PCI networks that now operate worldwide, and the entire discipline of acute coronary care.

TIMI, and the industrialisation of the clinical trial

Braunwald founded the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) Study Group in 1984. TIMI turned the multicentre cardiovascular trial into a rigorous, repeatable instrument, and the TIMI flow grades and TIMI risk score entered daily clinical language. Successive TIMI trials defined thrombolysis, antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy, and lipid lowering after acute coronary syndrome.

Chair, editor, teacher

He was founding Chair of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, Chair of the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Distinguished Hersey Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He wrote more than a thousand peer-reviewed papers, founded Braunwald's Heart Disease — the reference text that carries his name on the shelf of nearly every cardiology department — and edited Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine for many years. The American College of Cardiology gave him both its Distinguished Scientist and its Lifetime Achievement awards. His most durable legacy may be neither the textbook nor the trials but the generations of academic cardiologists he trained.
